New phone scam making its rounds, says people are being told they missed jury duty and have a warrant out for their arrest

(Ogden–jc)  State Police were called to a serious accident along Interstate 74 in Champaign County last night. Police say the accident happened around 8pm in the east bound lanes of I-74 at mile marker 203. Traffic in the area was being diverted to route 49 for several hours. No word on the injuries sustained was given. 

 

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois is home to some of the highest student loan payments in the country. The personal finance website WalletHub analyzed the latest consumer data and compared the median student loan payment amounts across 50 states. Illinois ranked 10th in the country with a median monthly student loan payment of $207. Maryland topped the list with an average student loan payment of $232, while West Virginia ranked 50th with a median payment of $139.

The group has met the last four weeks with representatives from the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University to discuss and map their vision for the future of Paxton over the next 10-30 years. (Champaign-jm) – University of Illinois Police are investigating after they said a Circle K employee was stabbed during a shoplifting incident Thursday. Police said that the theft-turned-stabbing happened at the Campustown gas station at First and Green Streets. The victim called police to report he tried to stop a man from stealing alcohol from the store. During a struggle, the employee was stabbed twice with an unknown sharp object. The offender ran away from the gas station and police were unable to find him during a search of the area.

(Danville-jm) – An Indiana woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing over a half million dollars from the vault of the Illinois credit union where she worked. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office reported that Laurie Allen, 55, must also pay $510,000 in restitution. According to prosecutors, between January 2014 and December 2020, Allen stole cash from the vault of Vibrant Credit Union in Danville, where she was employed as a branch manager.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Department of Public Health is encouraging Illinoisans to take advantage of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day taking place on Saturday. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and various local organizations are hosting events around the state to collect tablets, capsules, patches and other forms of prescription medication that may be outdated or are no longer needed. Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps and illicit drugs.

(Champaign-jm) – Champaign has some pipe work to be done after a water main break Thursday morning. The burst pipe caused a road closure and is affecting traffic around Marketplace Mall. Illinois American Water is working to repair the main break on North Market Street between Eisner Road and Wilbur Avenue. The pipe burst flooded the ground and roadways nearby, and caused the road to buckle and crack. It’s expected to take several days to fix.

(Urbana-jm) – The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a new phone scam making its rounds throughout the county. Officials said the scam involves people being told they missed jury duty and have a warrant out for their arrest. The callers have also claimed that call recipients are part of a class action-lawsuit due to improper jury summons and offered assistance to get to jury duty. Jury summonses in Champaign County are always sent by the U.S. Postal Service and people are never notified by phone of a warrant for their arrest, officials explained. None of the reports the Sheriff’s Office received involved people currently summoned for jury duty and there is no class-action lawsuit.

A Lakeside Falloween Festival at Buckley Lake will be held on Saturday with a flea market from 9-2, food trucks from 10-3, touch a truck from 12-3, kids crafts at 1, carnival games at 2, pumpkin sweep at 3 and trunk or treat at 4.

 

Accolade on Pells will hold a fall festival on Saturday from 10-2. Activities include bounce house, hot dogs, face painting, games and more.

 

The 2023 Flessner Fall Fest in Roberts will take place on Saturday.

 

Paxton IGA will hold a cookout benefiting Prairie State Church Camp on Saturday from 10-2.

 

Paxton native and “The Voice” winner Gina Miles will perform 2 sold out shows on Saturday Evening and Sunday afternoon at the Cadillac in Paxton.
