(Springfield-jm) – Illinois residents can expect to pay more for property insurance premiums this year according to a recent report, citing a 20-to-30% spike since the onset of 2022. As reported in The Wall Street Journal, Illinois is one of six states with the steepest increases. Tornado-prone Illinois has joined extreme weather targets like Texas and California on the list that was compiled with info from S&P Global Market Intelligence. With inflation at a 40-year high, building and repair costs are high, and that is having an impact on insurance costs across the nation.

(Champaign-jm) – Two people from Texas and one person from Indiana were injured in a shooting in Champaign early Sunday morning. Police were called to the 200 block of N. Neil St. for a report of a shooting with injuries. They found an 18-year-old woman from Fort Worth, Texas with a gunshot wound to the foot. A 25-year-old man from Donna, Texas was shot in the leg. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment. As police continued to work the crime scene, a 25-year-old man from Gary, Indiana arrived at the hospital. He had driven himself. He had a gunshot wound to the arm.

 

(Urbana-jm) – A new grant will help land the city of Urbana two new fire stations in 2024. The city got a $1.5 million grant that will go toward the construction. The old stations are on Philo Road and North Lincoln Avenue. The new Philo Road station will be built across the street; North Lincoln will have a new destination between Goodwin and Bradley Avenues.

(Champaign County-jm) – One person is dead following a crash on Illinois Route 130 south of Philo. Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup identified the victim as 30 year old Suzanne Ayers of Sidney. The crash happened at the intersection with County Road 700 North. Ayers was taken to an area hospital and was later pronounced dead. State Police are still investigating.

(Springfield-jm) – Every man, woman and child in Illinois is on the hook for $37,000 for the state’s unfunded public pension liabilities, according to a new report. The seventh annual American Legislative Exchange Council's "Unaccountable and Unaffordable" report on public pension liabilities pegs the amount of debt across the nation at nearly $7 trillion. Illinois comes in second to last. Illinois also came in second worst for overall unfunded liability and funding ratio. While the Illinois Auditor General puts Illinois’ five state-run public sector pension unfunded obligations at $140 billion. Illinois spends $1 out of every $5 it collects in taxes for pensions.

(Urbana-jm) – The University of Illinois Police Department is warning the community about a string of sexual extortion cases last week. Officials said that on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the UIPD received a report each day of students communicating with someone on Instagram and the conversation becoming sexual. In one instance, the student sent intimate photos of themselves; the other two were invited to a video call to engage in sex acts.After the photos were sent and the video calls ended, officials said the offenders then demanded money from the students, threatening to post the content on public social media platforms or send it to their social media contacts.

 

(Savoy-jm) – The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a Subway restaurant in Savoy was robbed at gunpoint Thursday night. The Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that at approximately 8:41 p.m., deputies responded to the restaurant on South Dunlap Avenue for a report of an armed robbery. Upon arrival, deputies learned a man entered the restaurant, brandished a gun and demanded money from the employee. He then left the restaurant and ran northwest; deputies were unable to find him during a search of the area. The suspect is described as being Black and in his early 20s. He was wearing a black hoodie, dark colored pants, a facemask and gloves.
