Missing Local Rantoul Man Found Safe

(Rantoul--jc)  -On March 5 at approximately 7:49pm the Rantoul Police Department was notified of a missing person. Melvin Fox was reported missing from his residence in the South Pointe area by his family. Rantoul Police immediately began a search of the area, but were unable to locate him. As the search continued, Rantoul Police received assistance from the Rantoul Fire Department, Rantoul Recreation Department, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, University of Illinois Police, Illinois State Police and the Illinois State Police Air Operations Unit. At approximately 11:31pm, Officers were able to locate Fox after he was spotted by the Illinois State Police Air Unit. Fox was found walking in a large farm field approximately ½ mile south of Chandler Dr. and ½ mile west of US Rt. 45 in rural Rantoul. Fox was found in stable condition and was transported to Carle Hospital for precautionary reasons. The Rantoul Police Department would like to thank all the agencies that assisted in locating Fox.

 

(Chicago--jc)  -- Attorney General Kwame Raoul, as part of a coalition of 54 attorneys general Tuesday urged Congress to enact the Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence  or Traced Act. The measure would curb illegal robocalls and spoofing. With the letter Tuesday, Raoul and the attorneys general urged Congress to support the TRACED Act. Raoul stated that  complaints related to robocalls continue to be among the most common consumer complaints in Illinois and nationally. The legislation will require voice service providers to participate in a call authentication framework to help block unwanted calls, and creates an interagency working group to take additional actions to reduce robocalls and hold telemarketers and robocallers accountable.


 

A bill in the Illinois Senate restricts where people can use e-cigarettes and vape pens. The measure, sponsored by Senator Terry Link of Waukegan, includes alternative smoking products like e-cigs in the Smoke Free Illinois Act. That means they couldn’t be used in enclosed public places, like a restaurant or business, or within 15 feet of the entrance.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois Board of Education says it is switching to a new standardized test this month for third through eighth graders across the state. Students will be given the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, or I-A-R, instead of the widely criticized PARCC test. Board of Education spokeswoman Jackie Matthews says the I-AR is about a third shorter than PARCC. Matthews says more sweeping changes are coming, including quicker results and more locally created questions.The PARCC exam was launched in 2015 and was met with criticism from school administrators and parents. They said it was too long and too difficult.

(Farmer City--jc)  --The City of Farmer City is accepting bids for the rebuild and extension of electric from the City's Power Plant to the northwest quadrant of I-74 and Rt. 54.  Bid documents may be purchased from B-H-M-G Engineers in Arnold, Missouri for twenty dollars. (Paxton--jc)  Ford County Board members could set up another meeting on wind farms when they meet in monthly session next week. The zoning committee meeting could also have a proposal ready for the full Ford County board to vote. Local Ford County leaders have been discussing its Wind Farm ordinance for around 2 years.

 

(Springfield--jc)  --Two bills sitting in the Illinois House would change estate tax laws, one by raising the tax threshold and the other by removing the tax completely.State Representative. Avery Bourne of Raymond, has introduced Illinois House Bill 14-54 which would repeal the estate tax — sometimes called the “death tax.” This is the second time Bourne has introduced the bill.Bourne said the existing estate tax disproportionally affects Illinois farmers.Bourne said that some estates can be taxed up to 16 percent. potential loss of tax revenue could instigate pushback on the bill.

 

Treasurer Mike Frerichs’ office is touting the success of the secure choice retirement program. In updating our story, Secure choice automatically enrolls businesses and their employees which don’t have a pension or 401-k plan, although workers can opt out. So far nine thousand people have accounts, saving over one million dollars says Treasurer Frerichs..

(Buckley--jc) --  The Buckley Village Board has set a meeting concerning the towns sewer system for later this month. Work on the aging system is needed and local leaders are set to considered extensive work for the major project. Buckley leaders have set a meeting for Saturday March 30th at 10 am at Christ Lutheran High School to discuss the potential 3 million dollar project with local residents.

(Watseka--jc)  Iroquois County’s E-T-B-S committee meeting is set for later today and on the agenda is the Iroquois Complex tower rent and a purchase from Verizon for a mobile command center. A computer purchase is also an expected topic. The E-T-B-S committee meeting comes to order at 5 this afternoon at the Administrative Center in Watseka.

During the  event, Champaign Mayor Deb Feinen and Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin, will read proclamations of support from the Cities of Champaign-Urbana, and Parkland College Trustee Jim Ayers will read the proclamation from the City of Monticello. Foundation Director Tracy Wahlfeldt will read a special certificate from Senator Scott Bennett.. Special giveaways and sweet treats round out the festival.
