(Taylorville--jc)  -- Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner assessed the tornado damage in Taylorville on Sunday.  More than 30 structures were damage by a tornado. Power lines were down, trees pulled up by the roots and now clean up has started. The governor says several areas were hit by Saturday night’s storms..

CHICAGO (AP) — A report from the Illinois Department of Public Health says more women have been crossing state lines to get abortions in Illinois. The Chicago Tribune reports that the findings released this week show more than 5,500 women from other states traveled to Illinois last year for the procedure, up from about 4,500 women in 2016. A Planned Parenthood of the Heartland spokeswoman says increasing abortion restrictions have forced women to incur additional expenses to access a safe abortion procedure.

(Urbana--jc)  -- A Rantoul man is due back in court today to face charges after a traffic stop in Champaign on Friday. The News Gazette reports that 32 year old Mantonia Duncan of Rantoul could be charged with a gun possession by a felon and a drug possession charge. He is also wanted on an outstanding warrant from Tennessee. Formal charges could come later today

Try your hands at woodworking, the Rantoul Recreation building woodworking shop is hosting woodworking sessions ran by skilled woodworkers. Hours are 6-9 PM on Tuesday and Wednesdays; Saturday from 8-11 AM, then starting on December 3rd a new session will start from 10 AM to 2 PM. Cost is 4 dollars an hour or 10 dollars per session.

 

 

(Paxton--jc)  Paxton Firefighters, police officers, E-M-A volunteers are invited to a pizza party tomorrow night at the Paxton Firehouse on North Market Street. The event is sponsored by Pride in Paxton as a thank you for the service the Paxton community and area received from these groups. In conjunction with the party is a cookie bake-off competition. Those attending will have the opportunity to judge the cookies.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois turns 200 today. And the state has a gala celebration planned. The Chicago party organizers have arranged will be at times solemn, like a solstice at Cahokia Woodhenge observed by some of the state's earliest inhabitants 1,000 years ago near St. Louis, and at times raucous, like a 2016 street party after the Chicago Cubs won the  World Series. A celebration is planned for the United Center in Chicago this evening. Governor Bruce Rauner will serve as host.

 

 

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Interest is growing in central Illinois about  Rivian Automotive’s electric pickup truck unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show.Normal Mayor Chris Koos says his city already has pre-ordered one of the R1T electric vehicles that are expected to launch in 2020.Rivian plans to manufacture electric vehicles in a former Mitsubishi plant in Normal. The plant was shut down by Mitsubishi in November 2015.  Rivian plans to hire as many as 1,000 employees to make electric vehicles in the area.The R1T is expected to travel between 250 and 400 miles (402 kilometers and 644 kilometers) on a single charge, depending on the model. The price starts at $61,500. The vehicle will be sold at a factory store in Normal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established this week as  National Influenza Vaccination Week It highlights the importance of continuing flu vaccination throughout the holiday season and beyond. As long as flu viruses are spreading and causing illness, vaccination should continue throughout flu season in order to protect as many people as possible against flu.

(Bloomington-dg)-Schools are considering a new proposal that could change the high school football schedule in Illinois.Illinois' high school football conferences could soon be a thing of the past. Schools will vote next month on a plan from the IHSA to replace conferences with districts. The districts would be based on size and location, said Matt Troha, assistant executive director of the The Illinois High School Association, the organization that oversees high school sports in the state.


 

(Gibson City-dg)-The CN IC Santa train will make scheduled stops in the area again this year. Friday Dec 7th it will be in Onarga from 6:30-8:30 pm. On saturday December 8th the Santa Train will make stops in Gibson City from 8am-10am, Melvin from noon until 1:30pm, Roberts from 1:45-3pm, Thawville from 3:30pm-5pm and Gilman from 6pm-8pm.
