Today is GIVING TUESDAY. Many Give Money, Time, or Their Resources. What Will You Give?

(Undated--jc  -- The Tuesday after Thanksgiving, better known as #GivingTuesday, is a national holiday founded on social media to celebrate a day of giving back. It leverages the reach of social media to encourage Americans to donate their time, money or resources. Last year, #GivingTuesday raised an estimated 274 million for nonprofits. The state of Massachusetts gave the most while Louisiana gave the least. Illinois was number 6 on the list, per capita.

 

(Gifford--jc)  -- Work on the south wall at Gifford Grade School will have two contractors completing the job. R.D. Cox Masonry will do the block repair work and Borchers Decorating will powerwash and paint the area. The project is pat of repair work on the old gym area at the school.

 

(Rantoul--jc)  Rantoul Police say 24 year old Henry Boykins has been arrested concerning a break-in at the Rantoul Rural King. That break-in and theft occurred on November 21st. Boykins is the third person arrested in the incident. Upon investigation, Rantoul police made the arrest following the execution of a court-issued search warrant. Police continue to look for a firearm that was stolen in the incident. Boykins was transported to the Champaign County Correctional Center on charges of Burglary, Unlawful Use of Weapons, Motor Vehicle Theft and Criminal Damage to Property. (Chicago--jc)  -- Attorney General Lisa Madigan, along with 14 other attorneys general, today challenged the appointment of Matthew Whitaker as Acting Attorney General of the United States. In an amicus brief filed in a Maryland case, the amici states argue that the appointment of Whitaker, previously the Chief of Staff to the Attorney General, to serve as the nation’s top legal officer violates laws clearly indicating that the Chief Deputy Attorney General takes over when an Attorney General steps down or is removed prior to Senate confirmation of a replacement.

(Paxton--jc) One week from today, Paxton Fire Department members, those with the Paxton Police Department and the Paxton based E-R-S officials are invited to a free pizza party at the firehouse on Market street in Paxton. The reason for the party is to thank the local groups for their service to the city of Paxton and area. The event is also a cookie baking contest. Those attending will have the opportunity to participate in the judging. Pride in Paxton is hosting the event for the group at 7pm next Tuesday.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois General Assembly convenes today for the final three days of its fall legislative session.The focus this week is on the House. It is poised to take override action on vetoed legislation which the Senate voted to reverse two weeks ago.The list includes a measure vetoed by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to set a deadline for local police to sign paperwork to help immigrant victims of crime . Victims of certain violent crimes who cooperate with police qualify for visas to let them stay in the country. The legislation requires police to act within 90 days to sign necessary paperwork.

 

 

OTTAWA, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois priest who spent time in prison for manufacturing and selling a date-rape drug has been removed from ministry again for getting involved in a criminal case without telling his superiors. The Chicago Tribune reports that the Peoria Diocese bishop removed the Rev. Jeffrey Windy from his post serving three Ottawa parishes in March. Officials found that Windy had involved himself in a criminal court case by visiting a crime victim with the suspect's father, who is a parishioner.

CHICAGO (AP) — Former President George W. Bush will receive a prestigious leadership prize from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation. The foundation announced Monday that Bush will receive the 2019 Lincoln Leadership Prize during a ceremony on April 1 in Chicago. The annual award recognizes people for a lifetime of service in the spirit of Abraham Lincoln, the nation's 16th president.

 

(Springfield--ab) In the final poll conducted as part of the Illinois Bicentennial celebration…voters chose top moments in the state’s history. The top 10 moments in Illinois history include tragedy and a huge victory says Abraham Lincoln presidential library spokesperson Chris Wills.

Other moments making the top 10 include ending slavery in 1865, the Lewis and Clark expedition, women being able to vote in 1913, the election of Barack Obama to the White House and the arrest of former governor Rod Blagojevich.

 

(Washington-jc)  A Noble fir from Oregon is now in Washington, D.C., being prepared to be this year's Capitol Christmas tree. It arrived Monday. The lighting is set for December 5th.  Rod Bain reports…

 

 

(Paxton--ab) Pack 35 and Troop 32 in Paxton are collecting non-perishable food and hygiene supplies for the Hands of Christ food Pantry. The collection will be on December 9th from noon to 4 PM. (Rantoul--jc)  No one was injured in an accident between a Rantoul City Schools bus and a mini van on Monday morning. The Rantoul Press reported the accident happened just after 8am Monday in the village. Both vehicles were on Eater Drive when the accident happened.  Slick roads were the cause of the accident.

(Rantoul--jc)  Who is responsible for a drainage problem along Illinois Avenue in Rantoul. That is the subject again today for a village of Rantoul committee meeting this afternoon.  Stormwater issues have plagued several properties along Illinois Circle Drive in the village. At issue is what taxing body is liable to help correct the situation. That remains a disagreement between the village and the Rantoul City Schools. The next meeting on the issue is 5 this afternoon at the conference room on Tanner Street.

 

 

(Paxton--jc)  -- The city of Paxton is getting a Christmas time gift tomorrow afternoon. Ameren Illinois is donating a 37 foot aerial bucket truck to Paxton. The Ford F-550 vehicle was part of the Ameren fleet. The vehicle is valued at around 13 thousand dollars and will be used to make repairs in areas too tough to reach. The event is set for 1pm Wednesday afternoon at the city garage on North Railroad Avenue.
