Former Governor Jim Edgar in Favor of Casinos

CHICAGO (AP) — Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar, once an opponent of land-based casinos, now says he favors casino expansion, including one in Chicago. Edgar says there are  “more pluses than minuses" than there were 25 years ago. At that time Edgar said he didn't want casinos in any part of Illinois. Now Edgar says the city of Chicago needs the revenue and the state of Illinois could use the revenue.The former two-term Republican governor made the remarks as an Illinois House subcommittee hearing about casino expansion bill was underway. Among other things, the measure would create six new casinos, including one in Chicago and another locally in Danville..

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup has released the name of a Westville, Illinois man who has died from injuries sustained after being involved in a motor vehicle crash at Illinois Route 1 and Greenwood Avenue in Westville, Illinois in Vermilion County on August 22, 2018. Twenty-eight (28) year old Tyler A. Karuzis, was pronounced dead at 10:33AM yesterday at the Carle Foundation Hospital Critical Care Unit in Urbana, Illinois. Mr. Karuzis died from traumatic head injuries he received during the crash. No autopsy will be performed. This death is being investigated by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Police.

Pontiac, IL – Illinois State Police (ISP) District 06 Commander Bill Langheim announces plans for Saturation Saturday enforcement. The enforcement initiative will occur on Saturday, August 25, 2018 in conjunction with the Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign which runs from August 20 through September 4. Saturation Saturday is a statewide initiative with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to raise awareness on the dangers of drunk and drugged driving, and increase enforcement to remove and arrest individuals driving under the influence. Troopers across the state will join county and local law enforcement agencies for increased enforcement during the evening hours of August 25 and early morning hours of August 26.

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A Chicago-based federal judge will preside over the public corruption trial of former Republican Congressman Aaron Schock. U.S. Judge Matthew F. Kennelly was named by 7th Circuit Court of Appeals Diane Wood to replace U.S. District Judge Colin Bruce. The Urbana-based Bruce was removed from hearing all his criminal cases after it was revealed he exchanged emails with an employee at the U.S. attorney's office in which he commented on and joked about one of his trials in progress at the time.

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A central Illinois museum wants to make sure that a historic mural stays in Peoria as the auction of the Marriott Pere Marquette and neighboring Courtyard by Marriott approaches next month.The Peoria Riverfront Museum filed a claim in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in July indicating ownership of the mural in the hotel lobby depicting the landing of the Marquette and Louis Joliet expedition in 1673 in what would later be Peoria, the Journal Star reported. The mural features French explorer Father Jacques Marquette greeting a group of Native Americans.

(Chamapaign--jc)  -- Champaign police continue to investigate a shooting that happened last night in the city. Authorities say the shooting happened along Hickory street and one person was taken to a local hospital.  Police were on the scene for several hours interviewing those at the scene and the investigation continues this morning.

 

 

(Gibson City--jc)  -- Gibson City leaders will look to purchase artificial lighted Christmas wreaths when they meet on Monday night. An ordinance approving execution of an option for a Solar lease for city property at the Industrial Park on the city’s west side is also a topic for discussion. Gibson City council members may also give a special license to the Burgers and Beer restaurant in conjunction with harvest Fest set for early September. The Gibson City council meets on Monday night.
