THOMSON, Ill. (AP) — A prison in northwestern Illinois will be completely activated by the end of next year, a Bureau of Prisons official said.The Thomson Administrative U.S. Penitentiary could have up to 600 employees . The facility will be a high-security institution and include some specialized units for inmates who are seriously ill, geriatric or mentally ill,  says Acting Director of Prisons, Hugh Hurwitz.



HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — Federal authorities say a man wanted in connection with the shooting of an U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent in Gary, Indiana is in custody. The U.S. Justice Department announced that 25-year-old Bernard Graham of Calumet City, Illinois surrendered Saturday afternoon. Investigators say three men ambushed federal agents on Thursday during an illegal weapons investigation in Gary, Indiana. The agent is was taken to an area hospital and is recovering.



(Undated--jc)  -- The U.S. Army is scouting large cities to find a home for a new command headquarters so it will be close to academia and industry, a first for the service.The Army typically likes to put its facilities away from population centers because there is space to train in rural areas and operations won't disrupt the public. The new command will focus on what the Army of the future should look like. Among the 15 sites under consideration is the Chicago area in Illinois.

SPRINGGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed a measure that will prevent consumer reporting agencies from charging people for protecting their credit reports.The governor signed the plan into law Friday. Companies can no longer charge consumers for placing or removing a freeze on their credit report accounts.The move comes after the credit reporting agency Equifax announced a massive security breach compromised personal information including names, Social Security numbers, and addresses. The hack affected approximately 143 million U.S. residents.Consumers complained they had to pay a $10 fee and faced other problems trying to protect their accounts.The proposal also allows consumers to place freezes online or via telephone. Previously such action could only be taken through registered mail. The measure is effective immediately.

(Champaign County--jc)  -- Strong winds and a possible tornado caused damage to some homes, trees and signs in southwest Champaign county on Sunday afternoon. A line of thunderstorms with strong staitline winds also caused some power outages in the village of Rantoul. More thunderstorms are also predicted for the first several days this week in the WPXN listening area.


(Springfield--jc)  -- A resolution to make Chicago a separate state has been a topic in Springfield. One State lawmaker says it won’t help the state and several downtown state lawmakers are pursuing the idea. It’s House resolution 11-38. One co-sponsor of the resolution is Shelbyville Republican Representative Brad Halbrook. He says Illinois continues to be two different regions in Chicago and downstate.  Chicago area State Representative Robert Martwick says the issue is just a distraction and is not good for Illinois. Any path for such a issue to go forward would need an affirmative vote from both areas and an act of congress.


SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The powerful head of the Illinois Democratic Party appointed an all-woman panel to choose its next executive director and the state's Republican governor signed ethics legislation on Friday Michael Madigan, the Democratic House speaker and party chairman, took the unusual step of naming 18 women to search for a replacement for his longtime aide Timothy Mapes, who was defrocked as party executive director amid allegations of inappropriate comments and dismissing complaints from women about their mistreatment.



ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A new automated system will alert some Illinois domestic violence victims when an order of protection they filed has been served, helping victims to better protect themselves. Winnebago County used a federal grant to put the system in place. Previously victims had to call county officials to check if a protection order had been served, and often it took several calls. With the new system, victims receive an automated phone call after a sheriff's deputy reports serving a protection order.


(Rantoul--jc)  -- No one was injured as a downtown Rantoul building lost some facade on the front side in the 100 block Sangamon Avenue. The incident happened just before 7 on Friday morning. The area was blocked off for several hours as crews were called in to repair and assess damage.

DIXON, Ill. (AP) — An August trial date has been set for a 19-year-old man who has pleaded not guilty to charges he opened fire at a northern Illinois high school last month. Matthew Milby Jr. faces felony gun charges and is being held in jail in lieu of $2 million bond. Milby is accused of taking a semi-automatic rifle to Dixon High School on May 16 as graduation practice was taking place in the gym. Milby's trial is set to begin Aug. 20 before Lee County Circuit Court Judge Charles T. Beckman.

Illinois Public Health Director Doctor Nirav Shah says the recall is already-cut watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew melons that may be contaminated with salmonella…
