A-P classes are important since a good grade on the A-P exam can earn students college credit and save money on tuition. (Gibson City-jm) -- Two Gibson City police officers are receiving pay raises. The city council approved giving Tony Row a $3.50 increase and Kaleb Kraft a $2.50 increase. They will be paid $27.50 an hour and $26.50 an hour respectively.

(Urbana-jm) -- A Rantoul man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to possessing a gun. 20-year-old Demetrius Collins pleaded guilty to aggravated unlawful use of weapons. Collins had a gun on him illegally when he was stopped on November 27th in Champaign. In exchange for his guilty plea, charges of possession of a stolen firearm, burglary and unlawful use of weapons were dismissed. Collins was given credit for 45 days and must pay a $200 fine.


(Springfield-jm) -- The state’s “Serve Illinois” program is highlighting volunteer opportunities in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. About 25 percent of Illinoisans volunteer their time to various causes, but Serve Illinois Executive Director Scott McFarland would like to see that number go even higher. (Thomasboro-jm) -- The contract for Thomasboro’s new police chief has finally been approved. Robert Rea was hired in December, however, an issue on the residency requirement delayed the approval. The original contract required Rea to move to the village, however, Rea was concerned that he might not be able to find a house within the allotted time. The new contract removes the requirement but adds language about making a best effort to find residency in the village.

(Ford County-jm) -- Ford County’s Public Defender is getting a raise. The county board approved making Harvey Welch’s position full time instead of part time. The state will pay two thirds of his salary provided it’s 90 percent of the states attorneys salary.
