URBANA, Ill. (AP) — A judge has allowed lawyers for a 27-year-old suspect in the abduction of a University of Illinois scholar from China to withdraw from the case on grounds he can't foot the legal bills. U.S. District Judge Colin Bruce said at a Friday hearing in Urbana, Illinois, that a defense attorney paid for by federal funds would be brought in to represent Brendt Christensen. Outgoing attorney Thomas Bruno says Christensen can't afford to pay for work that could include a death-penalty defense.

(Urbana-jm) -- An Urbana man has been federally indicted on child pornography charges. 56-year-old Robert Decker was arrested on charges of distribution and possession of prepubescent child pornography. If convicted he faces up to 20 years in prison on each count.

 

 

(Gibson City-jm) -- The Gibson City city council is expected to approve a new recycling contract at tonight’s city council meeting. Council members will be asked to approve the contract with Ridgeview Recycling. The Gibson City city council meeting gets underway at 7 p.m.

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois candidate for governor Daniel Biss is naming a state representative from Rockford as his running mate. The campaign announced state Rep. Litesa Wallace as a lieutenant governor candidate. Friday's move comes after Biss, a Democratic state senator, dropped his previous running mate over his stance on Israel. Several Democrats are trying for the chance to unseat Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in next year's election.

(Ford County-jm) -- Several area fire departments were busy with calls over the weekend. Roberts and Melvin firefighters were called to a two vehicle rollover accident Friday evening. Early Saturday morning, Elliott firefighters were called to a single vehicle rollover. No word on if there were any injuries with either accident.


 

(Rantoul-jm) -- Rantoul Township High School leaders are expected to approve a fiscal year 2018 budget at tonight's school board meeting. In addition to approving the budget, school board members are also expected to approve hiring an architectural firm and discuss refinancing 2010 bonds. A budget hearing for the Rantoul Township High School school board gets underway at 6:45 with the school board meeting beginning at 7.

(Milford-jm) -- A Milford man was arrested on an outstanding warrant in Vermilion County. Milford Police arrested 43-year-old Jason Woods on a warrant for failure to appear for a traffic offense. Woods was taken to the Iroquois County Jail.
