CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois Appellate Court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by social service providers suing Illinois over the lack of payment during the budget impasse. The Pay Now Illinois coalition sued last year in Cook County to force the state to honor contracts during the stalemate. The appellate court dismissed the case Thursday and directed providers to the Court of Claims for relief.

 

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is calling state legislators into a special session to work out a budget deal and end an impasse which could soon enter a third year. The Republican announced the news Thursday in a Facebook video and statement, accusing majority Democrats of "ignoring" his recommendations. Democrats rejected Rauner's statements Thursday, saying they've presented viable options. The special session dates are set from June 21 until June 30. The fiscal year begins July 1.

(Rantoul-jm) -- A Rantoul teen has been arrested for stealing a car with three children in it Thursday. According to Rantoul police, they were called to J.W. Eater Junior High for a stolen vehicle with three small children ages 9 months, 5 and 9. An officer located the children near Veteran’s Parkway and Chanute Street unharmed. Police arrested 18-year-old Kevin Lefever in Vermilion County. He was taken to the Champaign County Correctional Center on charges of Vehicle Theft and Child Endangerment. Lefever had been arrested days earlier for stealing two vehicles in the village.

URBANA, Ill. (AP) — Police say the FBI is investigating the disappearance of a Chinese woman from a central Illinois university town as a kidnapping. Twenty-six-year-old Yingying Zhang was about a month into a yearlong appointment at the University of Illinois' Urbana-Champaign when she disappeared June 9. University police released surveillance video Monday showing Zhang entering a black Saturn Astra vehicle in Urbana that afternoon. Her friends told police she had gone out to sign a lease.

(Urbana-jm) -- A Rantoul man has been sentenced to two years probation for unlawful restraint. 25-year-old Jack Cardwell pleaded guilty in Champaign County court to unlawful restraint after he admitted he pinned his girlfriend against the wall of their mobile home back in May. In exchange for his guilty plea, a charge of domestic battery was dismissed.

Rachel Hurliman submitted her resignation this week as both high school girls basketball coach and junior high math teacher to take a teaching position in Urbana. Hurliman went 30 and 27 in two seasons with the Panthers. Nathan Lawler will take over the program. He was also hired to be a junior high special education teacher.

 

ERIN, Wis. (AP) — Erin Hills was kind to Rickie Fowler and rough on several others during the first round of the U.S. Open. Fowler is atop the leaderboard following a 7-under 65 that included seven birdies and no bogeys at the Wisconsin course.
