Ayo listed as Day to Day

Most of us Illini fans who watched the past game, had a scary sight in the final few seconds of that game. Ayo Dosunmu was flying down the court with 3 or 4 seconds on the clock trailing by one-point. The stage was set again for the Illini star to hit yet another game-winner this season and we were ready for it. 6’5” guard made a move to the rim, and slipped. He went down in a heap clenching his leg around his knee and had to be helped off the court. My heart sank to my stomach when that happened like most. Seeing your closer and star player who is no doubt going to the NBA in the upcoming draft, goes down like that is a feeling that you can’t explain.

After undergoing MRI tests, and credit to the Illini medical staff, there was no “structural damage” to his knee. No ligament tears, no breaks or fractures, thankfully. Ayo has been listed as “day to day” and will travel on with the team on the East Coast trip starting with Rutgers tomorrow afternoon.

While he is recovering, somebody has to step into his leadership role. What better time for Alan Griffin to step up and show Illini nation what he can do? As a little bit of redemption for serving his suspension from the incident in West Lafeyette earlier in the season. The time is now, Alan. He is a pure scorer and we have seen it in multiple games this year, he rebounds very well for a guard, flies around on the glass; most importantly he doesn’t seem to get shaken up in big moments. Feliz and Fraizer no-doubt are going to have to play key roles in the next few days or weeks, and they can. Feliz gets all the intangibles done on the court that doesn’t get enough pub, Trent can score in an instant from three and he is going to have to while Ayo is sidelined.

The Illini have the depth at the guard position to play great basketball in the absence of Ayo. The question that I don’t have an answer to is who? Feliz, Trent, Alan? One of those three is going to have a great game against Rutgers and right the ship so to speak, and I see the Illini getting back in the winning column tomorrow afternoon. The Rack is a tough place to play, but so is Mackey Arena, and the Chrysler Center. Both places the Illini have won this season.
